Moving Memories: Preserving Stories of Care, Resilience and Belonging in Islington

Thanks to the support of funding, Moving Memories will bring together older and younger residents across Islington to uncover, record and preserve stories that might otherwise be lost. Through oral history, creative arts and intergenerational exchange, the project will celebrate the everyday experiences of care, resilience, migration and belonging that have shaped life in the borough.

Over 18 months, the project will engage 20 older residents and 30 young people, including 10 Young Heritage Ambassadors who will receive training in oral history, interviewing, heritage interpretation and digital storytelling. Together, participants will help create a lasting archive of memories, photographs and personal histories that reflect the rich diversity of Islington's communities.

The project aims to record 20 oral histories, digitise more than 100 photographs and heritage materials, and generate over 600 volunteer hours. Creative outputs will include a community photography exhibition, a youth-led podcast series, a short documentary film, a poetry anthology, a digital e-book and educational resources for local schools. All heritage materials will be preserved for future generations through a permanent archive and free public access to digital resources.

One of the most powerful aspects of Moving Memories is the opportunity for generations to learn from one another. Older residents will share their experiences of community life, migration, neighbourhood change and mutual support, while young people will help document and interpret these stories through creative and digital media.

By preserving memories that are often absent from traditional archives, Moving Memories will strengthen community connections, celebrate Islington's diverse heritage and ensure that local stories continue to inspire future generations. Together, we are creating a lasting legacy of care, resilience and belonging for the people of Islington.
